Why do this course?

Understanding the sonographic features and diagnostic role of ultrasound in early pregnancy is crucial for healthcare professionals due to its significant impact on patient care and outcomes. Early pregnancy poses unique challenges and risks, such as ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, where timely and accurate diagnosis can be lifesaving. A comprehensive course in this field equips practitioners with the knowledge to interpret ultrasound findings effectively, enabling early detection and informed decision-making regarding patient management. Ultimately, such training not only enhances diagnostic accuracy but also improves overall maternal and fetal health outcomes through timely intervention and appropriate medical guidance.

Course description

This course will explore sonographic features and the diagnostic role of ultrasound in early pregnancy. First you will recap on the sonographic appearance of the normal pregnancy before 10 weeks; this is also explored in the Basic Training Online Program, but is summarised in this course for clarity. Then you will look at the causes and impact of vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain in early pregnancy; followed by prediction, diagnosis and psychological impact of miscarriage; pregnancy of unknown location (PUL); and finally retained pregnancy tissue and enhanced myometrial vascularity (EMV). Ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy and gestational trophoblastic disease, are covered in separate courses in the Advanced Training Curriculum.
