Why do this course?

Ultrasound has been used for nearly 30 years as the main modality to help diagnose fetal CNS anomalies. Completing this course is crucial for healthcare professionals involved in prenatal care as it enhances their ability to accurately screen and evaluate the fetal brain during mid-trimester anomaly scans. By updating technical skills and knowledge on targeted fetal neurosonography, participants can improve the early detection and diagnosis of central nervous system anomalies, ensuring better management and outcomes for both the mother and fetus during the critical second and third trimesters.

Course description

The aim of this course is to review, describe and update the technical aspects of the screening evaluation of the fetal brain to be performed as part of the mid-trimester anomaly scan; to present the indications and procedure for the detailed evaluation of the fetal CNS; and to review the sonographic presentation and pathophysiology of CNS anomalies detectable by ultrasound focusing on the second and third trimesters. This is the first part of a two part course on central nervous system anomalies in the second and third trimester. Pathology requiring targeted imaging will be explored in-depth throughout the lessons. The topics covered in this course are the normal and advanced neurosonogram; the ventricular system; midbrain, hindbrain, and the posterior fossa;  CSP and the corpus callosum; the spine and neural tube defects.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the normal development of the fetal central nervous system.
  • Learn to assess the normal morphological appearance of fetal brain structures such as the CSP and corpus callosum, ventricular system, midbrain, hindbrain and posterior fossa according to the different stages of pregnancy.
  • Understand the requirements of a routine screening neurosonogram, and the indications for targeted neurosonography.
  • Understand the procedure for performing targeted neurosonography.
  • Learn to assess the normal morphological appearance of the fetal spine.
  • Recognize the normal appearance of the fetal brain and common pathological appearances on ultrasound

Key questions

  • What is the normal fetal nervous system appearance in the second and third trimester?
  • How is routine neurosonography performed? What are the key landmarks for screening?
  • What are the indications for targeted neurosonography and how is it performed?
  • What are the pathophysiologies, morphologies, diagnoses and prognoses of fetal central nervous system acquired and developmental abnormalities?
