This is the second part of a two part course on central nervous system anomalies in the second and third trimester. This course starts with a review of the ISUOG guidelines on neurosongraphy repeated from the first course; and proceeds to review the sonographic presentation and pathophysiology of select CNS anomalies detectable by ultrasound and MRI focusing on the second and third trimesters.
Overview
Course name: ATC4 Fetal anomalies – brain and CNS part 2
Duration of course: 12 hours (+ supplementary materials)
Length of access for each course: 12 months
Certificates: 12 CME credits and ISUOG Certificate of Completion
Access: Online learning, learn at your own pace.
Education level: Advanced

Suitable for: Practicing obstetricians, trainees, fellows, residents, nurses, radiographers, sonographers, GPs and healthcare professionals providing antenatal care and performing ultrasound scans.
Why do this course?
This course is essential for developing expertise in using ultrasound, a primary diagnostic tool for nearly 30 years, to identify fetal central nervous system (CNS) anomalies. By enrolling, you'll enhance your ability to detect and understand these anomalies, leading to better patient outcomes and advancing your career in maternal-fetal medicine. This specialised knowledge will also enable you to contribute more effectively to multidisciplinary teams, ensuring comprehensive care for both mothers and fetuses.
Course description
The aim of this course is to review, describe and update the technical aspects of the screening evaluation of the fetal brain to be performed as part of the midtrimester anomaly scan, and to present the indications and procedure for the detailed evaluation of the fetal CNS, which constitutes ‘targeted fetal neurosonography’; a dedicated examination of the fetal brain and spine that requires specific expertise and sophisticated ultrasound equipment. Pathology requiring targeted imaging will be explored in-depth throughout the lessons, along with indications for fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging. This is the second part of a two part course on central nervous system anomalies in the second and third trimester, the chapters on the normal and advanced neurosonogram are repeated from the first course. The topics covered in this course are the normal and advanced neurosonogram, fetal brain space-occupying lesions, acquired brain injury, malformations of cortical development, fetal Infections and CNS, Vascular Anomalies, late diagnosis, when MRI adds value, syndromes with CNS features.

Learning objectives
- Understand the indications and procedure for an advanced targeted approach to performing neurosonography
- Know the common and less common pathological fetal central nervous system conditions and syndromes, and their appearance on ultrasound
- Understand the effect of fetal infections on the central nervous system
- Understand the advantages and disadvantages of US and MRI in assessing the fetal central nervous system
Key questions
- What is the normal fetal nervous system appearance in the second and third trimester?
- How is targeted neurosonography performed? When is a targeted approach warranted?
- What are the pathophysiologies, morphologies, diagnoses and prognoses of fetal central nervous system acquired and developmental abnormalities?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of ultrasound vs MRI in the assessment of the fetal nervous system?

Trainees/residents and sonographers/radiographers
Proof of status: All trainees, residents, sonographers and radiographers will need to submit proof of their trainee, resident, sonographer or radiographer status by way of a letter from their Department or Institution. The letter must be in English and dated within the last 3 months and submitted by email to [email protected] along with the name of the course you wish to purchase.
Sonographer definition: A sonographer is a non-physician medical imaging professional who performs diagnostic medical sonography, or diagnostic ultrasound.
Trainee/resident definition: A trainee is a medical professional who is not yet fully qualified or practicing without supervision within their chosen specialty and in accordance with the relevant national regulatory authorities; a resident is in residency training which leads to specially or subspecialty) certification.
