Why do this course?

In the last 20 years, ultrasound examination of fetal face has become an essential part of the 11-13+6 week scan and has been subjected to intensive investigation.

Initially, assessment of the fetal face and in particular the nasal bone was an important component of screening for aneuploidy. However, advances in ultrasound medicine have now enabled earlier detection of craniofacial anomalies. This in turn may facilitate earlier diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities and genetic syndromes.

Course description

In this course, we will outline the normal development of the fetal face and the normal appearance of the face at the 11-13 week’ ultrasound. We will then examine an approach to better improve the diagnosis of common craniofacial anomalies, in particular, orofacial clefts and micrognathia.

The course covers the following topic areas; Normal development of the fetal face; cleft lip and palate; micrognathia and retrognathia; eye anomalies; nose anomalies; ear anomalies; neck anomalies.
