Why do this course?

This course is essential for healthcare professionals looking to enhance their understanding of congenital infections and their impact on fetal development. It provides in-depth knowledge of common pathogens, prenatal diagnosis, treatment options, and long-term outcomes. With a strong emphasis on ultrasound’s role, following the latest ISUOG guidelines, the course also covers emerging concerns like COVID-19 and re-emerging infections such as congenital syphilis. Through case studies and evidence-based insights, learners will gain the skills needed for early detection, effective management, and prevention, ultimately improving maternal and fetal health outcomes.

Course description

Congenital infections are an important cause of birth defects worldwide. This course will explore in detail the most common pathogens that are associated with congenital infection syndromes. The course will focus on epidemiology and pathophysiology of congenital infections, prenatal diagnosis and treatment and short and long term outcomes. The important role of ultrasound in the diagnosis of congenital infection is emphasized in a separate lesson with multiple cases included. Prevention strategies are also reviewed. The resources included in this course are aligned with 2020 ISUOG Practice Guidelines on the role of ultrasound in congenital infection. The lesson on COVID 19 infection in pregnancy is also included, as it has been proven that the vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus exists, although it is considered a rare event. The lesson on less common infectious causes of congenital syndromes (e.g. congenital rubella and varicella syndromes) is included along with globally re-emerging congenital syphilis infection.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session, learners will be able to describe the epidemiology and prevalence of maternal infections associated with congenital infections and identify key diagnostic approaches for detecting maternal primary infections during pregnancy. They will explain the relationship between the timing of maternal infection, the risk of vertical transmission, and the severity of the congenital syndrome. Additionally, learners will discuss the role of amniocentesis, including the optimal timing for diagnosis, and evaluate the use of ultrasound and fetal MRI in diagnosing and monitoring affected pregnancies. They will also recognize common ultrasonographic findings and develop an evidence-based approach for optimal follow-up and management of congenital infections during pregnancy.

Key questions

  • How common are various congenital infections?
  • What is the role of amniocentesis in diagnosing congenital infections
  • What is the role of ultrasound and what are the common sonographic findings associated with specific congenital infections?
  • What is the optimal diagnostic approach to diagnosing primary maternal infection?
  • What are the pros and cons of various management options for prevention and treatment of congenital infections?
  • What are the long-term sequelae of various congenital infections
  • What is the relationship between the timing of maternal primary infection and vertical transmission?
  • What is the relationship between the timing of maternal primary infection and severity of the congenital infection syndrome?
