Why do this course?
Pre-eclampsia remains a significant contributor to maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early detection and effective monitoring are crucial to improving outcomes, and ultrasound plays a vital role in this process. This course provides healthcare professionals with the latest, evidence-based knowledge aligned with the ISUOG Practice Guidelines, equipping them with the technical and clinical skills necessary to implement effective screening protocols. By doing this course, practitioners can enhance their ability to identify and manage hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, ultimately contributing to safer pregnancies and healthier births.
Course description
Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy impact up to 10% of expectant individuals, with the prevalence of pre-eclampsia (PE) globally estimated at around 3%. This course is structured around the ISUOG Practice Guidelines on the use of ultrasound for screening and monitoring of pre-eclampsia. Its objective is to critically examine the latest evidence and, where feasible, offer evidence-based recommendations regarding ultrasound's role in the detection and follow-up of pre-eclampsia. This course emphasizes the technical and clinical aspects of ultrasound screening, assuming the availability of essential resources such as equipment, skilled practitioners, and expertise for implementation.

Learning objectives
- Understand the different options for pre-eclampsia risk stratification.
- Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of multi marker screening compared to the use of maternal characteristics alone.
- Recognize the importance of pre-eclampsia prophylaxis, including target population, dose and timing of aspirin use.
- Differentiate between the most commonly used sets of diagnostic criteria, and the role of biomarkers in outcome prediction and triage to facilitate resource allocation.
- Assess the role of maternal haemodynamic characteristics on pathophysiology and their possible use in triage, diagnosis and treatment selection.
- Describe the long term implications of pre-eclampsia and postpartum blood pressure management.
Key questions
- What causes pre-eclampsia? How does our understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease influence how we treat it?
- What models of prediction and prevention can we use for pre-eclampsia in the first second and third trimesters?
- How should maternal cardiovascular health be assessed?
- What is the optimal management after positive screening? What is the best management after pre-eclampsia diagnosis?
- How does multiple pregnancy influence how we predict and prevent pre-eclampsia?
- What therapeutics are being investigated for treatment of this disease in the future?
