Why do this course?

Understanding ultrasound physics and Doppler fundamentals is crucial because it forms the foundation for effectively using and interpreting ultrasound technology in medical diagnostics. Knowledge of ultrasound physics helps clinicians optimize image quality, troubleshoot technical issues, and understand the limitations of the technology. Familiarity with Doppler principles is essential for accurately assessing blood flow and detecting vascular abnormalities, which is critical in both obstetric and gynecological care, as well as other medical fields. This expertise ensures accurate diagnoses, effective patient monitoring, and the safe application of ultrasound, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and more reliable clinical practices.

Course description

A comprehensive grasp of the underlying principles governing Doppler ultrasound is essential for precise screening, prediction, diagnosis, and effective management of many different gynecological conditions and pregnancy complications. In this course we will explore; the physics of Ultrasound and fundamentals of Doppler including safety.

This overview course aims to explore the fundamentals of Doppler in ultrasound, detailing the precise mechanisms that govern its functionality and ensuring its safe application. We will explore critical aspects such as the selection of vessels to be measured, the optimal timing during gestation for these measurements, and the nuanced interpretation of the obtained results. Doppler also plays an extensive role in cardiac evaluation and anatomical assessment however Doppler investigation into fetal anomalies will be covered in the courses on first and second trimester anatomical evaluation that can be found in other modules of the online Advanced Training Curriculum.

By providing a comprehensive understanding of Doppler ultrasound, this course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of utilizing this diagnostic tool within ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology.

  • Understand principles of physics that underlie ultrasound in the use of Doppler as a diagnostic tool and how it can be used safely.
  • Understand how Doppler results are obtained and how the results can be interpreted.
  • Appreciate how technical proficiency measuring Doppler parameters leads to enhanced diagnostic sensitivity.
  • Understand the principles of ultrasound safety, and how to mitigate associated risk.

Key questions

  • What is the speed of sound in tissue and how is this used to create an ultrasound image?
  • How to recognize and adjust for ultrasound artifacts?
  • What is the Doppler shift and how does it relate to measuring blood velocities?
  • What is the process for obtaining Doppler signals?
  • What indices are used to interpret spectral Doppler waveforms?
  • What safety principles govern the use of ultrasound?
