Why do this course?

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women globally. Despite being one of the most preventable cancers, it is clear that cervical cancer remains a significant global health challenge. However, if it is detected early, and managed well, cervical cancer responds well to treatment. Ultrasound scanning has a crucial part in the detection, diagnosis and management of the disease. Its versatility and accessibility make it invaluable for clinicians worldwide, particularly so in resource-constrained settings where more costly imaging technologies may be impractical or scarce.

Course description

This course will begin by identifying and describing the common ultrasound features specific to cervical cancer, providing you with the knowledge to recognize and diagnose the disease accurately. You will compare ultrasound with other imaging modalities, enabling you to make informed decisions about the most appropriate imaging approach for staging cervical cancer. You will gain a deeper understanding of how ultrasound plays a crucial role in the management of early cervical cancer, including its use in evaluating fertility-sparing options.

You will also cover ultrasound assessment techniques for locally advanced cervical cancer, encompassing the ventral compartment, dorsal compartment, lateral paracervical assessment, pelvic side wall, and ureters. You will explore the role of ultrasound in assessing lymph nodes, kidneys, and distant sites in advanced and metastatic cervical cancer. By the end of this course, you will be well-equipped to utilize ultrasound effectively in the early detection, accurate staging, and optimal management of cervical cancer patients.

Learning objectives

  • Proficiently identify and elucidate the prevalent ultrasound features associated with cervical cancer, including tumor morphology, vascularity, and tissue texture.
  • Articulate a comprehensive understanding of ultrasound's comparative advantages and limitations when juxtaposed with other imaging modalities in the staging of cervical cancer.
  • Gain a thorough comprehension of the applications of ultrasound in the context of early-stage cervical cancer, with a specific emphasis on its utility in assessing suitability for fertility-preserving treatment strategies.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in the ultrasound assessment of locally advanced cervical cancer, encompassing comprehensive evaluations of the ventral compartment, dorsal compartment, and lateral paracervical areas, including meticulous assessment of the pelvic sidewalls and ureters.
  • Exhibit a high level of expertise in utilizing ultrasound for the assessment of lymph nodes, kidneys, and distant anatomical sites in cases of advanced or metastatic cervical cancer.

Key questions

  • What are the typical ultrasound features of cervical cancer?
  • How can we use ultrasound to assess eligibility for fertility sparing surgery in early stages of cervical cancer?
  • How can we use ultrasound to evaluate the extent of tumour in locally advanced cervical cancer?
  • What is the utility of ultrasound in the assessment of lymph node metastasis in women with cervical cancer?
  • How does ultrasound perform compared to MRI in the diagnosis of cervical cancer?
