1999 Gold Medal Award article

Prof. Kypros Nicolaides is Professor of Fetal Medicine at King’s College Hospital, London. He was born in Cyprus and studied medicine at Kings, training in obstetrics and gynecology and specialising in fetal medicine. He has carried out extensive research in many aspects of fetal diagnosis and therapy leading to the publication of more than 1400 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals. His research publications on imaging and prenatal diagnosis have transformed ultrasound practice and his work to implement quality control for nuchal translucency has led to this technique becoming an established screening test of Down's syndrome and other genetic conditions. He was awarded the ISUOG Ian Donald Gold Medal in 1999 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field.

He has provided training in fetal medicine to more than 500 doctors from 50 countries and has supervised more than 50 doctors to undertake research leading to PhDs and MDs. In 1995 he founded the charity The Fetal Medicine Foundation, which has donated more than £45 million to promote research and training in fetal medicine throughout the world.

Prof. Antonia Carla Testa is currently Associate Professor of the Institute of Obstetric and Gynecological Clinics at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy and Director of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences School at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart-Claudiana University, Bolzano, Italy. She is the Director of the Departmental Operational Unit of Outpatient Gynecology and Director of the Center for Ultrasound in Gynecological Oncology “Class Ultrasound” at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital Foundation, IRCCS.

Her main scientific areas of interest are ultrasound diagnosis of gynecological tumors, ultrasound assessment of pelvic anatomy, innovation in ultrasound. She was medical consultant for leading companies (Samsung, Esaote, GE, Canon and Philips) in the development of ultrasound equipment to improve their ability to diagnose and recognize pelvic tumor masses.

She has published over 250 papers in international Medline-indexed journals (H-index of 49 on Scopus, 8,730 citations), authored 20 international book chapters, and has given 350 invited lectures over the past ten years at international scientific meetings. She was Associate Editor of “Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology” 2006-2015. She chaired the 26th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Rome, Italy (ISUOG), 2016 with over 3,000 delegates. Since 2014, she has organized the Oncological Gynecology Ultrasound Advanced National Courses, attended by more than 3,500 gynecologists.

She was a Board Member of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), 2011-2019 and she was the Vice President of the “Società Italiana di ecografia in Ginecologia e Ostetricia”, 2008-2010.  She is a member of the ISUOG Education Committee (since 2019) and Chair of the ISUOG Visual Encyclopedia (VISUOG) Gynecology Project (since 2013). She is currently the Editor of the Glown (FIGO Global Women’s Medicine) Textbook of Ultrasound in Gynecology.

As a member of the Steering Committee of the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) collaborative group (since 1999), she participated in the research protocols with the enrollment of over 35,000 patients from 35 centers globally. She organized the IOTA6 study involving more 21 centers in Italy. Through the courses she has organized in Italy, nearly 3,000 gynecologists have achieved IOTA accreditation.

She participated in the preparation of the National Guidelines for uterine sarcomas (SIGO, 2019), in the revision of the Italian Guidelines on ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology (SIEOG, 2022), in the development of the International Consensus on preoperative diagnosis of ovarian tumors (ESGO/ISUOG/IOTA/ESGE, 2021), and in the development of Guidelines for the fertility-sparing treatment and follow-up in gynaecological cancers (ESGO/ESHRE/ESGE, 2024)

Dr Roberto Romero, MD, D.Med.Sci., is Chief of the Perinatology Research Branch of the NICHD/NIH. He trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Yale University, where he was Director of Perinatal Research, before joining NIH.  Dr. Romero’s team has made seminal contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of ectopic pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies, prediction and prevention of preterm labor/delivery, and the role of infection/inflammation in preterm and term parturition.

In addition, Dr. Romero is an author of over 1000 peer-reviewed publications and several books, including the medical best seller, Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Anomalies. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the recipient of 14 Doctorate Honoris Causa and Honorary Professorships from Universities worldwide.

Dr. Romero has been honored by national and international professional societies for his medical and scientific contributions, including the Ian Donald Gold Medal (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology), the Erich Saling Award from the World Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Maternité Prize in Obstetrics, awarded by the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, and also, is the first obstetrician to receive the prestigious Asan Award in Medicine from the Asan Foundation in South Korea.  

Dr. Romero is Editor-in-Chief for Obstetrics of one of the oldest journals in its discipline, the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. The journal has a circulation of 42,000 in the United States and has published seminal work that has the changed the lives of mothers and children.

Dr. Roberto Albinagorta Olortegui

Obstetrician and Gynecologist, ISUOG member since 2011. Currently, he is the Head of the Maternal Fetal Diagnostic Unit of International Clinic and Director of the Center for Advanced Diagnosis of Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain in Lima (Peru). 2001 Gold Medal Award article

Receiving her MD in 1976 from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Benacerraf went on to complete her internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and her fellowship in ultrasound and computed tomography at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. During her 30-year academic affiliation with Harvard Medical School, she has risen to the rank of clinical professor in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology and radiology. From 1991 through 1993, Dr. Benacerraf was codirector of high-risk obstetric ultrasound at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and from 1993 through 1999 she was director of the obstetric ultrasound at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Active in the ultrasound community, Dr. Benacerraf has directed and organized a host of postgraduate ultrasound courses. Among her many roles in the ultrasound community, she is an elected fellow of the American College of Radiology and the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, was treasurer of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology for 7 years and is a current board member of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She was treasurer of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) for 2 years,  is the current President of that society.   Dr. Benacerraf is also the medical director and president of Diagnostic Ultrasound Associates, PC, a medical practice that she founded in 1982.  She has served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine from 2000 to 2010.   Her contributions to the field of diagnostic ultrasound have been recognized by the receipt of the Ian Donald Gold Medal of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Frye Award and the Holmes award both of the American Institute of Ultrasound.  She was selected to deliver the Silver Lecture at Barnard College in 2007, and received the 2008 Marie Curie Award from the Association of Women Radiologists. In 2010, she was the recipient of the Larry Mack award for lifetime achievement in ultrasound research from the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound.

Vincenzo Berghella is originally from Pescara, Italy, where he moved after high school to attend Manhattanville College, New York, USA. He did medical school at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), in Philadelphia; Ob-Gyn Residency at New York Downtown Hospital in Manhattan, New York City, and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship at TJU, in Philadelphia, where he remained and is now Director of the MFM Division and Fellowship Program.

Vincenzo Berghella (VB) has authored over 350 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, is the editor or co-editor of medical textbooks such as ‘Obstetric Evidence Based Guidelines’ (in 3rd edition), ‘Maternal Fetal Evidence Based Guidelines’ (in 3rd edition), ‘Evidence Based Labor and Delivery’, ‘Obstetrics: normal and abnormal pregnancies’, and ‘Operative Obstetrics.’ He is also the author of over 40 other books (see www.amazon.com). VB has been a member and leader (chairman) of several Committees of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), is an Oral Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, is a Past-President of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), and is a Board member of the SMFM Foundation. Dr Roee Birnbaum is an obstetrician and gynecologist, focusing on fetal ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis of fetal malformations, including early diagnosis. He is currently working in the OB-GYN Ultrasound division at the Tel Aviv medical center, focusing on fetal brain malformations, and early diagnosis of fetal anomalies. Previously, he was working under the direct instruction of Prof. Dario Paladini, at the Istituto Giannina Gaslini pediatric hospital, Genova, Italy, focusing on fetal heart and brain malformations. He is a faculty member of several teaching courses worldwide. His main research focus is the fetal brain (normal and pathology), and early brain development.

Professor Tom Bourne

Professor Tom Bourne was ISUOG President between 2020 and 2022 and is curently Chair in Gynaecology at Imperial College London, Hon Consultant Gynaecologist at Queen Charlottes and Chelsea hospital and Visiting Professor at KU Leuven in Belgium. He is an authority on managing early pregnancy complications, emergency gynaecology and gynaecological ultrasonography. He trained in ultrasound at Kings College Hospital in London. He subsequently worked at the University of Göteborg, Sweden as Medical Research Council visiting scientist, Hamar in Norway, and Leuven in Belgium. He was appointed senior lecturer and consultant gynaecologist at St George's University Hospital London before moving to Imperial College. He has edited seven books and published over 400 papers. He sits on the management committee of the Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research. He is medical advisor and trustee of the patient group, the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. He is immediate Past-President of the UK Association of Early Pregnancy Units. He is co-founder and CEO of the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) group and sits on the steering committees of several large multicentre international trials. He is founder member of the RCOG task force on “supporting our doctors”. He is honorary fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, honorary member of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and honorary member of the Brazilian and Hungarian Ultrasound Societies.

His principal research interest is diagnostics in early pregnancy and gynaecology including the IOTA, IETA, IDEA and MUSA studies, microbiome, metabolomics, novel biomarkers, and AI. Prof. Dr Rabih Chaoui, was born and schooled in Beirut, Lebanon. His medical studies and specialisation in obstetrics and gynecology were undertaken at the Charité Medical School, Humboldt University, in Berlin, Germany. Between 2001 and 2004, he was professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Charité University Hospital, Berlin and since 2004 he has worked at the Center of Prenatal Diagnosis and Human Genetics in Berlin. An ISUOG member since 1994, he has been a Board member from 2003 to 2013, including two terms as Chair of the Education Committee, and received the Stuart Campbell Award for Education in 2018.

Prof. Dr Chaoui has written three books on fetal ultrasound and more than 250 papers and monographies. Since 1986, his major interest has been in fetal ultrasound to include fetal heart, fetal 3D, first trimester ultrasound, ultrasound in genetic diseases and high-resolution ultrasound.

Dr Conrado Milani Coutinho is currently a senior consultant in Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Clinics Hospital, University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. His special interests are related to the use of ultrasound during pregnancy for prediction, prevention and diagnosis of fetal and placental anomalies and the great obstetrics syndromes. Conrado completed MSc and PhD degrees in Tocogynecology (Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine, University of São Paulo) and a post-doctoral fellowship in Fetal Medicine in St. George’s University Hospital.

Conrado is currently involved in various academic and associative activities. In the same year, he created the Maternal Fetal Unit of Colsanitas Clinic in Bogota, Colombia. He is also responsible for begining the first recognised fellowship program in MFM at the University of Rosary School of Medicine in Colombia.

Currently, he is the Director of the Fellowship program in MFM, Fetal Cardiology and Fetal Neurology at the Sanitas University and University of the Rosary. As Director of the fellowship program, he is responsible for research and education in the unit and for all courses and online education offered by Sanitas University.

He is currently ISUOG's Ambassador to Colombia and Latin America at large.

Dr Simon Meagher is consultant sonologist at the Perinatal department, Mercy Hospital for Women, Melbourne. He also serves as Medical Director of Monash Ultrasound for Women where he oversees a team of 50 sonologists, sonographers, genetic counsellors, phlebotomists and administrative staff in delivering a tertiary level ultrasound service across south east Melbourne. Dr Meagher has dedicated 30  years of his term as Medical Director, teaching and lecturing in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound both locally and overseas. He has delivered over 800 lectures, across 17 countries, and 43 cities worldwide. In 2015, he was awarded ‘Sonologist of The Year’ by the Australian society of Ultrasound in medicine (ASUM) in recognition  of his teaching skills and his commitment to  hands on training within the hospital setting at the Mercy Hospital for Women and for  his commitment and contributions to ASUM.

His interest in clinical research has focussed on early pregnancy screening and diagnosis he has published over 100  articles in peer review journals, including 15 articles  in the last 3 years focusing on first trimester  pregnancy screening and diagnosis. Dr Meagher has described five original sonographic fetal markers during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy. He is now focusing his interest on aneuploidy and embryo development from  seven to 10 weeks as we approach the dawn of a new era of genetic screening via free fetal DNA analysis.  

Dr Meagher has taken on multiple leadership positions - early in his career as the Chair of the Standards of Practice Committee at ASUM, examiner and executive board member for the ASUM Diploma of diagnostic ultrasound and later as council member of ASUM. Professor Liona Poon is an Academic Subspecialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine, devoted in improving maternal and fetal health. Dr Jessica Preisler is Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Clínica Alemana Santiago and Hospital Clínico University de Chile, Chile as well as 2012 Clinical Research Fellow in early pregnancy and acute gynecology Imperial College London, and recently part of the ISUOG Next Generation Group. A/Prof. Daniel Rolnik is a consultant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Monash Medical Centre and a senior lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Prof. Dirk Timmerman  is a Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at KU Leuven, Belgium, and Clinical Head of benign gynecology and early pregnancy UZ Leuven. Prof. Thierry Van den Bosch defended his PhD in 2007 on the diagnosis of endometrial disease. His clinical research focuses on the diagnosis of endometrial and myometrial pathology, endometriosis and fertility exploration. He has published over 150 papers and has been over 100 times invited speaker at international conferences in English, Dutch and French.

He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the KU Leuven (Belgium) and at the University of Pretoria (South Africa). In 1992 he was appointed consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Unit of Gynecologic Oncology, of the University of Stellenbosch and Tygerberg Hospital (South-Africa). Dr Heron Werner Jr is a specialist in fetal medicine and ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology. Between 1992-1996, he underwent Internship in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Fetal Medicine at the Institut de Puericulture de Paris and Hôpital Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Paris, France obtaining the title of  Doctor "Assistant Étranger " at the "Université Paris Descartes". In 2000, Dr Werner completed his Master's degree in Obstetrics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). In 2012, he also completed his PhD in Radiology with the same University. He is a 'Visiting Professor Lectureship' in Radiology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), USA, member of the Brazilian Academy of Ultrasoud (Chair n.27) as well as member of the Latino America Academy of Ultrasound (Chair n.30).
