General travel information

  • Currency: The Mexican Peso (MXN) is the local currency, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas.
  • Tipping: There is a tipping culture in Cancún - expect to be asked to add service when paying in restaurants, and to pay cash tips in hotels, etc.
  • Language: Spanish is the official language, though English is widely spoken in tourist zones.
  • Weather: Cancún enjoys a tropical climate year-round, and mid-September falls during the rainy season. Temperatures are warm, averaging between 27–31°C (81–88°F), with high humidity. While brief afternoon or evening showers are common, they are typically followed by sunny skies, so we recommend you pack for all eventualities - hot weather clothing plus layers, a sun hat and an umbrella, sun cream and mosquito repellant.
  • Transportation: Public buses and taxis are reliable for getting around the city. Please note, local buses take cash only. Car rentals are also recommended for day trips.
